Inspired by contemporary repair movements, such as Platform21, Repair Cafes, and TomofHolland's Visible Mending Programme, which promote mending as both creative and sustainable practice, I chose to explore both traditional darning methods and the oversights of twentieth-century urban renewal programs as perhaps well-intentioned, yet highly flawed repair efforts.
Using historic maps of New Haven and photographs of former Mayor Richard Lee as source material, this series highlights the danger of repair when the power to "mend" is limited to a privileged few.
