Living Library

artist + scholar residency space

Formerly a dense residential and commercial neighborhood, the border between Federal Hill and the West End in Providence, RI is now an educational center, with three public high schools, school offices, and several youth organizations located within a few blocks of each other.

Taking formal inspiration from houses historically common in this neighborhood, this project proposes adaptively reusing an abandoned warehouse into a residency space that would give visiting scholars and artists from Providence's universities a home base connected to Providence's public schools. The space would contain private offices/studios, communal spaces, a public gallery, and a teaching studio for after-school enrichment classes.
