My senior thesis at Brown, Against Bronzewashing: Contemporary Artists and the Remaking of Monuments, looked at monument proposals, temporary monuments, and monument commissions through the lenses of public art and public history.
I coined the term "bronzewashing" to bring together two related problems of permanent monuments: the cleaning of these monuments post-"vandalism," and the erasure of historical conflict in the name of consensus or community, often enacted by the creation of monuments. |
